The History of the Wedge Shoe

Image
It Has Returned as One of the It Shoes for Spring 2024 The history of the wedge shoe is a fascinating journey through fashion, innovation, and cultural evolution. From its humble beginnings to its status as a staple in modern footwear, the wedge shoe has undergone numerous transformations, reflecting changes in style, technology, and societal norms. The origins of the wedge shoe can be traced back to ancient civilizations such as Greece and Egypt, where platform shoes were worn for both practical and symbolic reasons. In ancient Greece, actors in theatrical performances wore platform sandals called "kothorni," which elevated them above the other actors and made them more visible to the audience. Similarly, in ancient Egypt, platform shoes were worn by royalty and aristocrats to signify status and wealth. However, it wasn't until the 20th century that the wedge shoe as we know it today began to take shape. In the 1930s, Italian designer Salvatore Ferragamo is credi...

A Traditional Work Skirt with a 2024 Twist The pencil skirt stands as a timeless icon of sophistication and style, beloved by women around the world for its flattering silhouette and versatility. Its history is a testament to the evolution of fashion and the shifting roles of women in society. From its humble beginnings to its status as a wardrobe staple, the pencil skirt has transcended trends and endured through the decades. Origins: The pencil skirt emerged in the late 1940s, amidst the post-war era when women began to enter the workforce in greater numbers. Leroux, who is credited with creating the modern pencil skirt in the late 1950s. Originally named the "H-Line" skirt, it hugged the curves of the body and featured a straight, narrow cut that elongated...

Don't Tell Me How To Dress

Image
The Fashion Police needs to be fired! Shut down the office. Close-up shop! Be gone from society! They’ve been in business for far too long. Women have been paying them too much attention, which needs to stop. What bothers me the most is that the Fashion Police have gained many recruits since the rise of social media. From Facebook to YouTube, many creators have at least one reel or video discussing what women should and shouldn’t wear, especially if they are over 40. What’s the big deal? I’ve seen women in their 60s wearing two-piece bathing suits, and they look great. I’ve seen 50-something women wearing short shorts with legs for days. I’ve seen women in their 40s wearing crop tops and mini skirts and looking fabulous. I say, if you got the body for it — wear it! And even if your body isn’t fit and toned (another issue I have with society), so what? It’s your body, and you decide how to dress it. It’s sad when people stick their noses into someone else’s closet. Get out o...

Round Toe or Pointed Toe Shoes - Which Do You Prefer?

Image
What's Your Shoe Style?  I like round-toed shoes. My parents inherited wide feet, so my feet don’t do well in narrow shoes. My toes need room to move! While pointed-toe shoes are cute and trendy, they’re not for every woman. I, for one, don’t like to mash my feet into shoes and limp around all day. That is not cool! I do own a few pairs of pointed-toe shoes. They’re flat shoes and a size 10. I do better with flatter shoes than heeled shoes. However, I have plantar fascitis, and my doctor told me to wear heels. Sure! I love a good chunky heel. I used to wear a lot of high heels during my clubbing days. I could wear those shoes for hours. Not anymore. I need chunky, thick heels. There was a post on Instagram about round-toed shoes being “dated.” I don't see it this way. Many trendy shoes are round-toed. For example, motorcycle boots, Doc Martens, and rain boots are generally round-toed. They even look better round-toed versus pointed-toed. So, the fact that some fashion influe...
