The question of what we’ll be wearing in the fall is one we ask ourselves the moment the February shows wrap. The fall 2024 fashion trends we sometimes think will take off don’t always materialize—or take more than a single season to mature. Others explode the moment they appear on the runway. So what is trending right now? And what are the key looks and pieces on our fall shopping lists?
Vogue’s Top 10 Fall 2024 Fashion Trends:
The Boho Blouse: Chloé ruffled turtleneck blouse, $3,250
The Suede Jacket: Massimo Dutti leather nubuck jacket, $599
The Runway Jean: Veronica Beard Haizley wide-leg jeans, $325
The Leather Midiskirt: Banana Republic lambskin leather skirt, $500
The Collarless Blazer: Bettter cropped wool blazer, $1,080
The Modern Midi Dress: Róhe silk scarf dress, $1,000
The Barn Jacket: Barbour x Alexa Chung Dorothy cotton-corduroy trimmed coat, $680
The Cool Corduroy: J.Crew wide-leg corduroy trousers, $148
The Funnel-Neck Coat: & Other Stories funnel collar coat, $379
The Standout Knit: Frame Fair Isle sweater, $578
The Everyday Embellishment: Tory Burch sequined coat, $2,998
A few of the trends and hero buys we’re most excited about at Vogue Shopping run along parallel lines. There are fluid, romantic separates that nod to the bohemian spirit; outdoorsy flannels and barn jackets that have a strong city spin, and artfully draped blouses that any modern minimalist would appreciate. All of these pieces stand alone—but also flow naturally into any wardrobe. (If there’s one main takeaway to be had, it’s that personal style, and a great wardrobe, is refined over years, not in a single season.)
The idea of preciousness was also put forward: What do we hold onto and save for special occasions, and what do wear right now to keep it from losing its lustre? We want our clothes to feel right for ‘now’ but also have longevity, and the major of these pieces—from the practical chore coats to the more delicate embellished skirts and tops—are meant to be worn and held onto. Duality exists in us all, and as we charge into the new season, why not let it serve as reminder to embrace that sentiment, both in life and in our closets? Below, the top five fall 2024 fashion trends to know and shop. (Vogue.com)
A Bohemian Mood
Elements of boho lead the charge for fall, but the focus is on luxurious classics with effortless movement—think romantic blouses, A-line skirts, and waist-cinching silhouettes that strike a more mature chord for fall. Chloé’s creative director Chemena Kamali described it best in her interview with Vogue Business and Vogue Runway’s global director Nicole Phelps as an “intuitive way of dressing” with an emphasis on “lightness, fluidity, and emotion.” A number of styles on the market that reflect this carefree spirit—like the romantic tops and lace and silk dresses that play with transparency and rippling ruffles—may feel familiar, but designers presented them in new and inviting ways. At Chloé, a gossamer, ruffled top looks decidedly modern when contrasted with leather separates (don’t miss the cape). A full skirt in two-tone leather or in an unexpected suede shade (Bottega Veneta) feels like a revelation in texture. Lean into accessories to play up your personal style—consider belts (Loewe’s button-ups comes pre-styled with a built-in one), gloves, and statement jewelry (à la Chanel) for finishing touches that define your point of view.
Modern Elegance
The ladylike energy that was sprinkled into spring wardrobes make its presence felt for fall, with cold-weather ensembles that bridge minimalism with a sense of feminine timelessness. The key buys here are a collarless blazer—short and fitted for fall; as a cocoon or scarf coat longer for winter—and pencil skirt (leather, wool; perhaps even exposed like at Prada). Artfully draped dresses and blouses (Bottega Veneta, Liberowe) and sweaters with built-in scarves (Carven) bring polish, and inspiration, to the fall layering conundrum.
