After a difficult year of strikes and box office uncertainty, the movers and shakers of the movie world all came together in Hollywood for the night they all try to pretend doesn’t matter, the Oscars. After an uncertain year for the industry, on a night where virtually no surprises were expected, the red carpet looks had a surprising elegance to them. Yes, even the ones that didn’t quite hit the mark. Maybe we’re reading too much into it, but the vibes were grateful and quietly celebratory, like everyone was just kind of happy to be a movie star on prom night. Let’s assess the choices!

The star of Anatomy of a Fall and Best Actress nominee has shown a knack for slightly offbeat style choices during awards season. We really enjoyed this look for being elegant and restrained, but just weird enough to unsettle you a little, which seems to be exactly where her style preferences lie. The eye makeup and severe hair would not have been our suggestions for a dress like this, but they only add to that feeling of oddness for which she’s so well suited.

The Barbie star strenuously avoided Barbiecore looks throughout the entire promotional tour and extending all through awards season, so this last-second explosion of classic sexy glam in a glorious Barbie pink was a pleasant surprise. Versace provided her with a chain mail gown fitted for the gods and she wisely opted to finish it off with one gorgeous necklace. It’s all she needed.

The star of Rustin and Best Actor nominee distinguished himself throughout awards season by wearing some of the most stylishly bold and distinct menswear looks in the history of Oscar campaigning. We were thrilled to see him show up for the big night in more of the same. As always, the fit is impeccable, but it’s the stunning jewelry and footwear choices that make the look.
